Mission and Core Values

History

The roots of Catholic education run deep into South Carolina soil. St. Anne Catholic School was founded in 1954 by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy and continues an extensive tradition of more than 135 years of Catholic education in Sumter, South Carolina. The Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy first came to Sumter when the Civil War forced them to move from Charleston to Sumter. In the 1860's, the Sisters founded St. Joseph Academy, Sumter's first educational institution. Parents were billed $2.00 per month and students came from as far away as Georgia and North Carolina.

Since 1990, St. Anne Catholic School has been staffed completely by lay personnel. In August 2008, St. Anne Catholic School marked another milestone in Sumter Catholic education by adding a four-year-old pre-kindergarten program. This extended St. Anne to a K4 through eighth grade program. Thus, in conjunction with St. Francis Xavier High School, the two schools are able to provide students with an excellent education from preschool all the way through high school. God has truly blessed our community!

St. Anne Catholic School continues today as a mission of the Sumter Catholic Community. We are grateful for the support of these three local parishes, St. Anne, St. Jude, and Our Lady of the Skies.
