Music Program

Music Program

We are proud of the music curriculum provided to St. Anne students under the direction of Mrs. Linda Coyne, our dedicated and talented music teacher. Mrs. Coyne seeks to not only provide students with a music education, but also to foster a love and appreciation for the Arts and the beauty that the Arts bring into our lives. Mrs. Coyne hopes that the music program nurtures the students' souls, and that the students will always support the Arts regardless of the career paths they choose.

Curriculum
The comprehensive series, Share the Music (Macmillan/McGraw Hill) provides students in Kindergarten through 5th grade with an education in the elements of music. Students in 6th through 8th cover these same concepts at a more sophisticated level. The music curriculum educates students in the following elements of music: pitch, rhythm, design, timber, and cultural and historical contexts. The goal is for students to perceive, perform, and notate these elements.

Students in grades K4 through 4th grade receive instruction twice per week; older students receive instruction once per week in the form of liturgical music. Those students that desire more instruction may elect Bell Choir. Special attention is given to All Saints Day's singing of the Litany of the Saints and to May Day's Singing Rosary.

Bell Choir
This elective is open to students in grades 5 through 8; it meets twice per week. Students become proficient in reading the G and F clefs while playing Suzuki Tone Chimes. Students play for various events during the year including the Christmas Concert, Carowinds Festival of Music, and Wednesday masses.

Honor Choir
This choir is sponsored by the South Carolina Music Educators Association. Auditions are held each September for students in grades 4 through 6. St. Anne students have been selected for the choir since its inception in 1997. The past two years, all six nominees-the maximum number allowed-have been selected by the adjudicators. Students selected for the choir perform in Charleston under the direction of a clinician with national status. Members of the choir then become part of the St. Anne Honor Choir which provides leadership for all musical performances. The Honor Choir rehearses on a weekly basis.

Christmas Program
The Christmas program is one of the high points of the school year. The program helps bring to life the meaning of the Christmas season for students and the larger St. Anne family. The music for the show rotates among three basic themes: the Joyful Mysteries, the Jesse Tree, and Lessons and Carols.

The Christmas program is performed at a local theatre and professional instrumentalists accompany the students. The entire student body performs in this production. The students spend much time and energy preparing for the program, and it is hoped that the students gain an appreciation of the depth of preparation required to perform well in public.

Outreach Program
Reaching out to others is a regular and important part of the St. Anne Music Program. Each month, a different grade visits Tuomey Hospital where students warm the hearts of the patients, doctors, and nurses with their music. Selected grades also visit local nursing homes, such as National Health Care and Covenant Place.

Festival of Choirs
For the past four years, students from St. Anne have sung in the annual Festival of Choirs sponsored by the Women's Afternoon Music Club. St. Anne is the only children's choir that performs in this venue.

Competition
St. Anne students regularly compete in the Carowinds Festival of Music each spring. They consistently receive Excellent and Superior ratings.
