The History of St. Anne Catholic School
The roots of Catholic school education go deep into South Carolina soil. St. Anne Catholic School was founded in 1954 by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy and continues an extensive tradition of more than 135 years of Catholic education in Sumter, South Carolina. The Civil War forced the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy to move from Charleston to Sumter. In the 1860's the Sisters founded St. Joseph Academy, Sumter's first educational institution to serve the needs of the students. Parents were billed $2.00 per month for the education of each child and students came from as far away as Georgia and North Carolina. Since 1990 St. Anne Catholic School has been staffed completely by lay personnel. In 1997 grades 6-8 resumed their pre-1987 status after spending several years as part of the Sumter Catholic High School campus. The following year the school received both Diocese of Charleston and the South Carolina Independent Schools Association accreditation.

Traffic Around the School. The front of the school, Magnolia Street, is reserved for daycare vans only. All other students must be dropped off/picked up via the Church parking lot, which has a Lafayette Street entrance. When dropping off students please let them out adjacent to the Main Hall porch so they dont have to walk across traffic. Parents desiring to escort their child to the classroom should park in the Church parking lot but not head-on to the playground fence. After school pickup should follow the same guidelines. During the dismissal hours there will be a faculty member controlling the flow of parking lot traffic. Please watch for children and do not ask them to cross traffic in the parking lot.
Volunteers St. Anne School could not operate without its cadre of volunteers. The school promotes volunteerism in the Christian sense and is deemed part of a familys time, talent and treasure given to the school on an annual basis. The family expectation is 20 hours of volunteer work per school year. Opportunities for volunteers exist at lunchtime, as homeroom parents, library assistants, lunchtime supervisors, yearbook committee, yard maintenance, etc.
School Handbook The Handbook is the student/parent guidelines for all families in the school community. It is sent home at the start of the school year with the eldest child of a family. The Handbook is to be read and acknowledged by both parents and students alike. The signed acknowledgment form, found in the Handbook, should be signed and returned to the applicable homeroom teacher.
